My mother called to give me my sister's progress.
"Ai yah, she's feeling better today and wants to go grocery shopping with me. Ai yah, she's pushing it."
Now to fully understand the impact of the "Ai yah"s of Chinese, it is ALWAYS said with a shake of the head and an almost imperceptible tsk that somehow resonates within the mind.
My reply? "Mom, if she pushes it, then it'll just be 10 weeks of recovery instead of 8. Maybe she'll learn by then."
Somehow my replies to my mother always bring some sort of comfort - she started laughing instead of staying worried.
