Ratcheting Up the Rhetoric

Ever hear of Lonelygirl15?

You wouldn't unless you've been watching the news lately, or heard some buzz over the internet about Youtube.

Here's what Howie Kurtz had to say about the phenomenon:
This set off a nationwide hunt for the online star "Bree" -- plus spinoff satires -- before the terrifying truth emerged: Bree was a fake, a fraud, a cyberscam. She was a 19-year-old actress named Jessica Rose.

Excuse me, the terrifying(???) truth?

How is that terrifying?

I'm sorry, ALL of the buzz I heard about Lonelygirl15 was that the productions were way too slick for a 15 year old to accomplish, and therefore, it HAD to be a gimmick. That's why the hunt for the real person started.

And yet, somehow, the fact that this was a marketing gimmick, was a terrifying truth.

George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, John Yoo, and the Republican party saying that Americans have the right to torture, is terrifying.

ABC showing 5 hours of unsponsored right-wing drivel full of lies and acting as if this was a PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT is terrifying.

The American Government feeling free to spy on its citizens is terrifying.

Filmmakers, looking for a gimmick and finding it, ISN'T.

If this was terrifying to Howard Kurtz, then maybe he shouldn't be covering Media at all.
